Summary

This will likely be a book I will read again and again。 It isn't easy to bring a fresh perspective to a classical story, but Madeline Miller did it brilliantly。 I read (and loved) Marion Zimmer Bradley's Firebrand years ago and was glad to see the other side of the tale brought to life in a similar way。 This will likely be a book I will read again and again。 It isn't easy to bring a fresh perspective to a classical story, but Madeline Miller did it brilliantly。 I read (and loved) Marion Zimmer Bradley's Firebrand years ago and was glad to see the other side of the tale brought to life in a similar way。 。。。more

This book absolutely broke me! I loved it however if you aren’t a fan of character driven, romance heavy novels then this probably isn’t the book for you。 Additionally it does cover a lot of heavy and problematic content: graphic depictions and mentions of rape, graphic depictions of murder and death, mentions of suicidal thoughts, explicit underage sex (as young as 13) so make sure to read trigger warnings before deciding if this is the book for you!

Okay,,,this literally was so good omg。 I cant even the romance, the action, Achilles and Patroclus。。。but mostly Patroclus have my WHOLE HEART。 This is definitely a 4。5/5 for me just because I wanted more romance from the two。 Totally recommend!

The way that Miller has with words is unlike anything I’ve read before。 There were multiple times I had to pause while reading this book just to take in what was written。 This is the first book I have actually cried over in a long time。 It was magnificent and I loved every moment reading it。

(view spoiler)[ yeahhh i get why patroclus was in love with achilles。 mans was perfect (literally)。 also fuck apollo (can i curse on here?)。 also <3 the thetis redemption (still a bitch tho)。 and also the sex scene was like,, maybe the biggest no-no i've experienced in a while。。。。。 they were 15 and just because the author didn't use the word 'penis' didn't mean it wasn't detailed!!!! i could tell u everything about that night because of how detailed it was written!! detailed sex scene of 15 year (view spoiler)[ yeahhh i get why patroclus was in love with achilles。 mans was perfect (literally)。 also fuck apollo (can i curse on here?)。 also <3 the thetis redemption (still a bitch tho)。 and also the sex scene was like,, maybe the biggest no-no i've experienced in a while。。。。。 they were 15 and just because the author didn't use the word 'penis' didn't mean it wasn't detailed!!!! i could tell u everything about that night because of how detailed it was written!! detailed sex scene of 15 year olds = big no-no!! but i guess it was for the sake of love (completely unnecessary scene still imo) so i'll stop being mad now。 (hide spoiler)]anyway。。。ok but real talk? patroclus and achilles' love is the only love i'll give a chance in this life。 in other words, what's the point of love if it's not as calamitous as theirs? my great love better end wars- or start wars for that matter。 my heart broke for achilles's and then it sang for him。 。。。more

I was promised that The Song of Achilles makes everyone cry, and I was not disappointed。 Did I cry as much as I thought I would? No, but I was still emotionally wrecked。 My actual rating for The Song of Achilles would be 3 stars, but I am giving it an extra star for emotional impact and the last quarter/ending of the book。 I will say that it was very difficult to get into as I found the beginning and some of the middle quite boring, but I was determined to make it to the sad parts which motivate I was promised that The Song of Achilles makes everyone cry, and I was not disappointed。 Did I cry as much as I thought I would? 3。5 It was really fun to view the trojan war from what Homer describes as a side or unimportant character!!! Glad patroclus got his moment to shine, and honestly Briseis got more time in this reimagining than in the Iliad, as well。 Also I just have to know, do all British people put the emphasis on a different part of Briseis' name or is that just this narrator?Honestly I was fine until the ending and then the last two chapters made me really sad but ultimately in a good way。 Pulls the heart str 3。5 It was really fun to view the trojan war from what Homer describes as a side or unimportant character!!! Beautiful writing, absolutely devastating, The Song of Achilles shows you love, heartbreak, and how pride leads to the downfall of many。

Closer to 2。5 stars, but overall not really worth the read。 It is a love story, that is true。 In the darkness their hands meet, and light spills in a flood like a hundred golden urns pouring out of the sun。

I am huge Greek mythology fan, but this book did not do it for me。 So many people raved about this book stating "It will destroy you" or "this is going to make you sob" and let me just say I did not shed a single tear。 I wonder if I did not enjoy this book because I learned about Achilles during school, so I knew what the outcome was going to be。 Overall, I just felt like the story dragged and I feel asleep several times while reading it。 I do not plan on giving up on Miller just yet and still w I am huge Greek mythology fan, but this book did not do it for me。 So many people raved about this book stating "It will destroy you" or "this is going to make you sob" and let me just say I did not shed a single tear。 I wonder if I did not enjoy this book because I learned about Achilles during school, so I knew what the outcome was going to be。 Overall, I just felt like the story dragged and I feel asleep several times while reading it。 I do not plan on giving up on Miller just yet and still want to read Circe。 Hopefully I enjoy it more than I did this book。 。。。more

I was going to hate this but the ending quarter really did its thing and also 💞patroclus💞 I recommend the audiobook for this。。。

I was not warned of the amount of tears this book would bring。 It is beautifully written and the audiobook makes it even more wonderful。 Madeline Miller wrote an incredible love story in the middle of a war myth and Frazer Douglas brought and incredible performance。 I bought a physical copy before I finished the audiobook because I want to be able to read it again。 I can't believe I had never heard of this myth before this year? And then several friends recommended this book to me。 I was absolut I was not warned of the amount of tears this book would bring。 It is beautifully written and the audiobook makes it even more wonderful。 Madeline Miller wrote an incredible love story in the middle of a war myth and Frazer Douglas brought and incredible performance。 I bought a physical copy before I finished the audiobook because I want to be able to read it again。 I can't believe I had never heard of this myth before this year? And then several friends recommended this book to me。 I was absolutely blown away with the writing and descriptions of everyone involved。 Another thing that for some reason no one warned me or the summary never gave was that it is told through the point of view of Patroclus。 He describes everyone as beautiful and clearly has a big heart。While it is slow in several parts where Patroclus is describing things in detail, there it makes up with emotions and hints for the future。 Absolutely recommended for anyone who has vaguely heard of this myth or anyone who wants to read a great love story in the middle of a war。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It would’ve been better if Patroclus’ death wasn’t teased so much。 There was a point where I was reading that chapter and I was just on edge the whole time, that I couldn’t understand what was happening。 It plays with your feelings all too much to the point where you don’t really get to feel it all when you’re actually supposed to。

This book is so enchanting and beautifully written。 How am I supposed to find another book to compare?

I knew going into this book that it would break my heart。 I dove in headfirst anyway。 Because like Achilles, I know that there is no glory in hiding and being afraid to get hurt。 Oh boy do I love this story。 And even though I am sitting here now, my heart heavy with loss and grief for Patroclus and Achilles, I am glad I got to go on that journey with them。 Learn from them and their bravery, their love and their mistakes。 Highly recommend!

My new all-time favourite book and now at the top of my recommendation list。 I have not cried at a book since I read the "Fault in Our Stars" in grade seven。 Masterfully written。 Even though this is a story that most people have heard before the way that Madeline Miller is unapologetic with Patroclus and Achilles is refreshing and new。 AMAZING! I highly recommend for people who grew up reading "Percy Jackson" but have now sort of aged out of that world。 My new all-time favourite book and now at the top of my recommendation list。 I have not cried at a book since I read the "Fault in Our Stars" in grade seven。 Masterfully written。 Even though this is a story that most people have heard before the way that Madeline Miller is unapologetic with Patroclus and Achilles is refreshing and new。 AMAZING! This is possibly the best book i’ve ever read! I’m so in love with it: the characters, the writing, the epic love story。 After reading Circe by Madeleine Miller, iI decided to read the Song of Achilles - this was a good decision to have made。 I finished it in three nights and wish i could have read more, to see more of Achilles’ and Patroclus’ relationship。 This book will leave you in tears, but it’s definitely worth it!

Well, this book kept my attention, but with all the Greek names, it made for somewhat difficult reading。 Graphic sex, gay or otherwise isn't my thing, though there was only a bit of this。 Also, I'm not a huge fan of teenage angst。 I haven't researched to see how much accuracy there was in what war was like the 1200's, but I did find that interesting。 Gods and Kings。。。。。fun stuff。 Well, this book kept my attention, but with all the Greek names, it made for somewhat difficult reading。 Graphic sex, gay or otherwise isn't my thing, though there was only a bit of this。 Also, I'm not a huge fan of teenage angst。 I haven't researched to see how much accuracy there was in what war was like the 1200's, but I did find that interesting。 Gods and Kings。。。。。fun stuff。 。。。more
